Historical Interior Renovation

The Battle-Friedman House was built in 1835 by Alfred Battle and his wife Millicent Beale. Alfred was from North Carolina and Millicent was from Maryland, but they met in Georgia. Soon afterwards, their family decided to move to the territory of Alabama. Alfred, rising in status, due to his agricultural and later business interests, wanted to be closer to the city life so they built this townhouse in 1835. The Battle family owned the house until 1875 when they lost it due to foreclosure in the last dark days of Reconstruction period.

Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau is a French term meaning "New Art" and is described as organic and free moving. The motifs throughout the design relate back to a highly stylized form of plants. The organic forms would often take a dramatic curve. These curves are known as the whiplash because of hw the lines would violently whip back and forth.

I visited this home fall of 2021. In this home I renovated the breakfast room into a bedroom.

I chose Art Nouveau as my style for this renovation, specifically 1905 -1925.
